CCSD and NWSL partner to build new athletic facility
Today, the Cherry Creek School District is announcing an exciting partnership with the new Denver National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) team. In alignment with our Core Values and our vision of a Pathway of Purpose for every student, CCSD and the Denver NWSL are collectively investing to build soccer fields and a stadium in Centennial. This first-of-its-kind partnership between Denver NWSL and CCSD, along with the City of Centennial, will help advance women’s youth, amateur, and professional sports in Colorado and benefit CCSD students, families, and the community at-large.
This is only possible thanks to the support of our community. In December, CCSD sold its first issuance of 2024 voter-approved bonds. Due to the strong credit rating of CCSD, the bonds were sold at a premium, which generated $46 million of additional funds for bond projects. A portion of these funds will support this project without impacting any of the 2024 bond projects promised to voters. It is important to remember that bond dollars can only be used for capital construction projects, not to support the operating expenses of CCSD, such as increasing teacher pay or reducing class size.
As the preferred school district partner of the Denver NWSL, CCSD will own and have use of playing fields for all sports except tackle football, providing CCSD students and youth sports across the metro region with much-needed additional playing fields for school and community use. In addition, CCSD will own and have long-term control of the Centennial stadium.
The partnership will also include a robust benefits package for CCSD students and families:
- Internship opportunities for CCSD students in sports management, health and wellness, facilities and equipment management, and other related roles
- Opportunities for CCSD athletes to receive instruction or mentorship from Denver NWSL staff and/or players
- Presentations or instruction from Denver NWSL staff or players for CCSD athletes and students, including CCIC business students
- Support for CCSD’s Teacher Apprenticeship Program for athletes interested in pursuing a future teaching career
- 500 tickets for regular season games
- A $100,000 donation to the Cherry Creek Schools Foundation
This project marks an exciting new chapter for CCSD and the start of a long-term partnership that opens doors to life-changing opportunities for students. This represents another Pathway of Purpose for our students, and it strengthens our commitment to advance the strategic goals of our district. With this innovative partnership, CCSD will continue to provide unique, world-class programs and opportunities that attract families to our community and ensure CCSD remains a destination district for academics, activities, and athletics.
