Fourth Grade
Elk Creek
In Elk Creek, we strive to create a collaborative learning atmosphere that brings students together to take responsibility for their own learning. Our mission is all students will succeed in the integrated curriculum with an emphasis on teaching both academic skills as well as "life skills.” Examples include note taking and study skills strategies, self-advocacy skills, collaboration, goal setting, and self-reflection. Fourth graders practice our TRAIL behaviors: Teamwork, Respect, Acting Safely, Integrity & Leadership.
Reading and Writing
In our fourth-grade curriculum, we employ a workshop approach to cultivate reading and writing skills. We believe it is essential for students to read like writers and write like readers. Our writing instruction utilizes the 6-Trait Writing program, emphasizing the use of advanced vocabulary and grammar within context. Reading skills are developed through targeted mini-lessons based on the Lucy Calkins curriculum, complemented by individual conferencing. Students engage with a diverse array of literature and non-fiction texts, which guide our conferencing and small guided reading groups.
Science
The FOSS Science curriculum is implemented throughout the year, featuring hands-on learning experiences that captivate our fourth graders. The units of study include Magnetism and Electricity for Physical Science, Earth, Moon, and Stars for Earth Science, and Environments for Life Science. Each unit is designed to engage students actively in the scientific process, fostering a genuine interest in exploration and discovery.
Social Studies
Our fourth-grade Social Studies curriculum focuses on Colorado history, where students explore the interconnectedness of geography, history, economics, and civics as they pertain to our state. This comprehensive approach helps students understand the rich cultural and historical tapestry of Colorado.
Math
We utilize the Bridges program for math instruction, which is a comprehensive curriculum designed to meet the Colorado Academic Standards for mathematics. Bridges in Mathematics provides rigorous, coherent, and engaging content that is accessible to all learners. The curriculum emphasizes the development of deep understandings of mathematical concepts, proficiency with essential skills, and the ability to tackle complex and novel problems. Through a blend of direct instruction, structured investigation, and open exploration, Bridges addresses the diverse learning styles of students, presenting material that is linguistically, visually, and kinesthetically rich while remaining mathematically robust.
