Wolf Creek
Welcome to Wolf Creek 5th Grade!
At Wolf Creek, we strive to make the end of elementary school a successful and memorable time while ensuring a smooth transition to middle school. We celebrate the perks of being in elementary school while holding high expectations for both behavior and academics. Daily use of planners helps our students develop strong organizational skills.
English Language Arts
Throughout the year, students will engage with a variety of novels in multiple ways, including read-alouds, shared reading, book clubs, and independent reading. We provide a wide range of levels, genres, and choices to meet the needs and interests of all learners. Picture books are also used to enhance reading and writing instruction. Writing is seamlessly integrated into our reading curriculum as students explore expository, persuasive, and narrative writing through the writing process. Our focus is on using the key elements of effective writing across genres.
Science
Fifth graders will dive into so many exciting topics in science! Students explore physical science by examining matter, its properties, and changes through heating and cooling. In life science, they study organisms, ecosystems, energy flow, and environmental impacts. Additionally, students investigate Earth's systems and the solar system in the Earth and Space unit. In the spring, we will have a short health unit called Human Growth and Development.
Social Studies
Students will explore early American history, including indigenous cultures, European exploration, colonization, and significant events leading up to the formation of the United States. Students will also develop geography skills to analyze locations, environments, and human interactions. Students are introduced to basic economic principles, including personal financial literacy, culminating in a special day at Ameritowne. Additionally, students will study the foundations of government, the Constitution, and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
Math
Our math program emphasizes a deep understanding of numbers and mathematical concepts. Fractions, multiplication, and long division are major focuses of the year. We use a variety of strategies and procedures, including the standard algorithm, to support student learning. Math games are a fun and interactive way to reinforce skills, and students typically play them at least once a week.
Just for 5th Graders
The highlight of fifth grade is our unforgettable outdoor education trip to Stone Canyon in Larkspur, CO. Over three days and two nights, students experience hands-on learning and adventure led by the highly trained and enthusiastic Stone Canyon Instructor team. These skilled educators use a variety of engaging teaching techniques to create memorable experiences while prioritizing the physical and emotional safety of every camper. This trip fosters teamwork, personal growth, and a love for the outdoors, making it a cherished tradition for our fifth-graders.
Another highlight is the 5th-grade Drumming Performance! With the support of our specials teachers, students put on an incredible performance that features art, music, and physical movement. This much-anticipated event takes place in the spring, showcasing the creativity and hard work of our 5th graders.
The final days of school at Dry Creek are truly unforgettable. During the last week, we celebrate with a “Day of Fun” organized by dedicated parent volunteers, filled with awesome activities. The week concludes with a heartfelt continuation ceremony, where each student shares their favorite memory at Dry Creek and their hopes for the future with friends and family. The ceremony is followed by a short reception, creating a meaningful time of celebration, reflection, and often, many happy tears. It’s a perfect way to honor our students’ growth and achievements as they move forward to middle school.
